CARPENTRY

Local or overseas carpentry?

A good cabinet is the result of design, specification, fabrication, packing, site measurement and installation. Geography is only one part of that chain.

What really changes

Local fabricationOverseas fabrication
Site verificationUsually easier to revisitNeeds disciplined measurement before production
Factory scaleVaries widelyCan offer highly automated production
ChangesGenerally easierMore costly once fabricated or shipped
Lead timeUsually shorter logistics chainMust include production, packing, shipping and customs
ReplacementGenerally fasterMay require another shipment
QualityDepends on system and teamDepends on system and team

Quality is a system

When we evaluate carpentry, we look beyond the laminate sample. We look at board specification, edge treatment, hardware, drilling accuracy, door gaps, drawer alignment, internal finishes, lighting integration, packing, site protection and who is responsible for installation.

Excellent overseas factories exist. Excellent local workshops exist. Poor examples exist in both places.

“Imported” is not a quality specification.Ask what is being made, how it is checked and how the site team will install it.

When each can make sense

Local can be strong when

The site has many irregular conditions, late changes are likely, access is difficult, or the project benefits from repeated physical coordination with the workshop.

Overseas can be strong when

The design is frozen early, quantities are substantial, factory capability is strong, the packing/logistics plan is disciplined and the installer understands the system.

What an owner should compare

  • Carcass and door material
  • Moisture resistance appropriate to location
  • Edge-banding and exposed-edge detailing
  • Hardware brand and exact series
  • Drawer systems and load ratings
  • Internal finish, not only external finish
  • Shop drawings and approval process
  • Site measurement responsibility
  • Installation and post-installation adjustment
  • Replacement process if a panel is damaged
